Vourvourou will leave you with an unforgettable memory if you observe it from the heights, just before arriving. It faces nine islands which in turn encircle the largest island of Diaporo. This bay with its turquoise waters evokes the fullness of a lake. Vourvourou did not really exist when it was attributed, in the 10th century, to the monks of Mount Athos. In fact, the monks inherited the surrounding area, known as the Land of Vourvourou, as well as the famous monastery of Hieromnemons located in the present Vourvourou. The complex was reclaimed in the 16th century by the inhabitants of Aghios Nikolaos, and then claimed in vain by the Russian monks in the 19th century
