Sykia is one of the oldest and largest villages in Chalkidiki, and one of the few traditional year-round villages. It was first mentioned in the 14th century, when it was called Longos. It owes its current name, which means "fig", to a gigantic fig tree that used to grow outside its walls. The best thing to do is to wander around on foot through the narrow streets that lead to a few mid-19th century houses, the school built in 1870 and the church of St. Athanasius, recognisable by its wooden roof. Built in 1819, it burned down twice, in 1821 and in 1854.
