Built at the foot of the Aroania Mountains, Kalavrita hides a tragic past that the average age of the inhabitants recalls with unease. On 13 December 1943, this former centre of resistance fell victim to reprisals by German soldiers who executed all the men and children of the village, more than 1,400 individuals. A memorial in memory of these victims stands today on the site of the execution. The church clock is still stuck at the time of the massacre, 14:34. Away from its past, Kalavrita is today a charming village in summer and a pleasant winter sports resort with excursions around.
