Engaruka is located 180 km northwest of Arusha, halfway between Lakes Manyara and Natron, in the foothills of the Ngorongoro Crater. Here you can visit one of Africa's oldest irrigation systems, a zebu market, Maasai bomas, participate in community life and go on walking safaris. The location is remote, but quite exceptional, on the way to Lake Natron. Nestled against the great escarpment on a permanent stream, this sleepy little town has the ruins of Engaruka on its outskirts, which remain a mystery to contemporary archaeologists. Market days, Monday and Wednesday, are particularly lively and authentic, with Maasai flocking to sell and buy goods as well as livestock.
