Located 142 km from Arusha, 25 km from Manyara Park, 50 km from Lake Eyasi and 20 km from the entrance to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, this town of 20,000 people, known as the "safari junction", is a convenient crossroads for tourists going on safari. They stay in lodges here, which are cheaper than inside the parks as they are not subject to the overnight tax. There is a range of prices, from mid-range to top of the range lodges (but no low cost camps). They are also more comfortable with swimming pools to cool off and hard facilities which are very welcome after hours of tiring 4x4 driving. There are banks, petrol stations, supermarkets, internet cafes, everything that connects us to our civilization before the climb to the wilderness!
