South of Kerak, the village of Mu'ta is home to a large university with over 12,000 students, whose brand new buildings in the middle of nowhere are surprising. At the beginning and end of the week, the traffic jams formed by the buses that come to pick up the students are impressive. Mu'tah is also an important place for the Muslims since it was here that the first battle between the Byzantines and the Arabs took place in 629. Three leaders of the Muslim army, companions of Mohammed, died here and are buried in Mazar, 3 km to the south. The place is a place of pilgrimage and there is also a small Islamic museum.
