Deir'Alla is a site steeped in history. Legend has it that it was the site of the biblical city of Sukkot, where Jacob rested after his battle with an angel. Today, there is not much to discover here, except the remains of a temple built around the 15th century BC. Deir Alla was the first Bronze Age village to be excavated in Jordan. Pottery was found there, and above all the Balaam inscription, the oldest known record of a biblical story. Deir Alla is above all a place of pilgrimage for the Muslims. It is here that the tomb of Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah, a companion of the Prophet, is located.
