A two-lane road bordered by the reed beds of the marshes connects Burgas to Sozopol in less than 30 km. It is one of the oldest cities in Bulgaria. Sozopol originates from the ancient Apollonia. Sozopol and Nessebar, its neighbor to the north, are considered the two pearls of the Black Sea. You can walk around the old town like in a museum. Built on a rocky peninsula, it aligns historical houses with stone foundations and wooden floors, in Byzantine style, in a maze of paved streets. These old fishermen's houses are now rehabilitated into guest houses, fish restaurants and stores for tourists. Archaeological excavations in the 2010s have uncovered a portion of the Roman wall of the ancient city. Deserted in winter, the peninsula is crowded in summer. It must be said that the houses perched above the sea and the small beaches do not lack charm. But the authenticity of the place has long since faded! Strolling through the alleys of the old town and admiring its silhouette with its cliffs perched on the sea, remains magical. The modern Sozopol with its vacation villages was built at the other end of the beach, in order to preserve the old town. Many Bulgarian tourists come here to relax during weekends and vacations. A marina and rich marinas in the north and famous beaches in the south complete the picture.
