76 km south of Bourgas and only 5 km from the Turkish border, Malko Tarnovo has long remained on the bangs of Bulgarian tourist activity. Until 1989, it was a buffer zone between the two opposing political blocs. Today, apart from the border crossing, it remains almost a no man's land. However, this small town is worth a stopover, if only for its architecture and museum. It is also a good base for exploring the nature reserves of the Strandzha Park and the beautiful surrounding villages. Information about the area and its rich biodiversity can be found at the park office.
