Founded between the 7th and 11th centuries on the old military route from the Danube to Istanbul, burned by the Turks in the 14th century, Sliven became an important industrial center in the middle of the 19th century, especially for textiles. Since then, the industry has declined and Sliven has lost its vitality. At the foot of the Great Balkan, it is now a spa village where people come to treat their gastric and cardiovascular diseases. Although it has no specific tourist attractions, it is a good base for visiting the natural park of Sinite Kamini with its 50 endemic species of plants and more than 160 species of birds.
