This medieval village is located in the southwest of Bulgaria, near the Mesta River and the border with Greece. It is connected by numerous buses, including from Sofia. For a long time, it was famous for its production of bells - the famous chan and toumbeletsi for the herds of Pirin and the Rhodopes. The town has given shelter to many refugees from the regions of Serres and Drama in Greece. Formerly Nevrocopy, it changed its name in 1951, taking the name of one of the key figures of the Macedonian Internal Revolutionary Organization fighting against Ottoman rule. Killed by the Ottoman troops in 1903, Gotse Deltchev was born in 1872 in Greece. Between the Rhodope and Pirin mountains, close to Greece, this small town with its typical red roofs with their four sides has developed strongly in recent years and is distinguished by its dynamism in a long deserted area. It is an attractive town for the whole mountainous region. Inhabitants can find shops, doctors, schools, taverns and bars. People even come from Greece to shop for food (everything is cheaper) and to play at the casino. Gotse Deltchev is a good starting point for an excursion to the western side of the Rhodopes. The steep villages in the surroundings are worth a visit. Take the time to walk through them and find yourself centuries back in time. Some of them are starting points for hikes to lakes and peaks.
