This village was founded in 1656 by Bulgarians who sought to escape the forced conversion to Islam by the Ottomans and settled in this remote and difficult to reach place. On the southwestern slopes of the Rhodopes, along the Kanina River, Kovatchevitsa displays a picturesque architecture with its wooden houses and slate roofs, two or three stories high, dating from the 18th century. This jewel of a village is suitable for rural tourism: walking routes start from here to the Siniya vir waterfall (the blue pool) and to the rocky site Kozi kamak, as well as to the small rural village of Leshten (8 km covered in 1h30 - 2h).
