Dimitrovgrad is a young industrial town crossed by the river Maritsa, the country's second largest vegetable producer, but its architecture is not very attractive. On the other hand, it is green and has 450 hectares of forests, gardens and parks. The Penyo Penev Park, the most beautiful in the city, pays homage to its famous poet. One can visit the house-museum which retraces his life and work. Fruit of the union of three villages, Dimitrovgrad was born on April 3, 1947. The town has been classified as a historical monument of architecture and urban planning in order to preserve the memory of the communist era, its humanist ideal and its totalitarian reality. It still bears the name of Georgi Dimitrov, Bulgarian communist leader.
