Hisarya (or Hissar) is a spa town. The Thracians had already built sanctuaries around the thermal springs when the Romans founded the city of Diokletianopolis nearly 2,000 years ago. In the Middle Ages, the Crusaders plundered and destroyed the city, before the Turks took over, giving it its present name and developing thermal baths. Hisarya, under the communist regime, was a famous spa. Today, it offers 22 mineral springs that supply the various balneotherapy centers, and vestiges such as the ramparts of the fortress, an ancient amphitheater and the sanctuaries of Starossel.
