On the road from Plovdiv to the Black Sea resorts, the peaceful Chirpan is worth a stop. It is considered to be the heir of the Roman site of Cherampol ("city of kind friends"), which arose near the Roman city of Pisus. Today's city was probably established in the 17th century near the Tekira springs under the name of Djerpan. It developed thanks to agriculture and craftsmen during the period of the National Awakening (18th and 19th centuries). After the Ottoman period, the craftsmen were ruined because of the lost markets on the Ottoman provinces, but the viticulture developed. The city was severely damaged by the earthquake in 1928.
