Founded by Crimean Tatar merchants in 1485, Pazardjik has become one of the most important commercial places (on land and on the river Maritsa) in the country, ahead of Sofia. Heavily industrialized during the Soviet era, it is now experiencing a difficult period. However, a break in its small, lively and green center reveals an interesting face of the country, off the tourist routes. Don't miss the Cathedral of Our Lady and its magnificent iconostasis carved in walnut wood by the masters of the Debour school. You can see human and animal figures among which wolves and dragons! Also a large synagogue.
