Stara Zagora (159 000 inhabitants) is the fifth largest Bulgarian city. It is singular by its grid plan with wide streets. Without housing any architectural wonders, the city is spacious, green and airy, even if one cannot ignore the forests of concrete bars and industrial remains. The name of the city is known by the beer, the most famous in Bulgaria, which is its pride. Remains of settlements from the Neolithic age (about 6000 BC) have been found in Stara Zagora, as well as evidence of Thracian occupation, but it was the Romans who gave it a major boost by making it a trading base on the Balkan route.
