On both banks of Ossam, Lovetch is divided between modern part and historical city center, the district of Varocha, where you can see houses of national revival architecture; Pokrit Most, covered bridge over the Ossam, is the masterpiece of the sculptor Koljo Ficheto. The city is worth a visit. In the Middle Ages, it was an important center. Its name comes from Lovets, "city of hunters". At the top of the town stands a huge statue of Levski and the partially renovated ruins of a medieval Bulgarian fortress. Lovetch was the seat of Vasil Levski's rebel activities until his arrest by the Turks in 1872.
