The town of Pleven is one of the most populated in the region, located at the edge of the Balkan foothills, south of the Danube plain. Here, in 1877, the famous battle of Plevna took place during the War of National Liberation. Almost 40,000 people died in this decisive battle. These resistance fighters are honored by numerous monuments throughout the city. During the communist era and until 1989, Pleven was one of the most developed industrial cities in Bulgaria, very popular with Russian tourists. This is no longer the case. Without any remarkable tourist attractions, its downtown is nevertheless lively and pleasant.
