Phitsanulok can be considered the last stop on the central plain before the North or Isaan. The town lies on the Nan River. This former capital of the Kingdom of Siam - stricken by fire in the early 1960s (destroying almost all its traditional wooden houses) - remains a pleasant resort, with points of interest in the town and on the river. Worth knowing: Pra Ong Dam means "black prince". This was the first name given to the man who would become King Naresuan, born in Phitsanulok in 1555, and who would distinguish himself in the war against the Burmese kingdom of the time, contributing to the rebirth of the Siamese nation.
