430 km north of Bangkok. Founded in 1257, Sukhothai was the first official capital of Siam for 120 years. Its prosperity of then radiated on all the area. Historians speak of this period of history as the true golden age of Thai civilization. It is said that King Ramkhamhaeng, known as Rama the Strong (1239-1317), was the originator of the Thai alphabet. It is also at this time that Buddhism knew its greatest expansion in Thailand. Listed since 1991 as a Unesco World Heritage Site, the historical remains are the main interest of the city. They alone justify a two-day stopover.
