This small provincial town of 25,000 inhabitants stretches along the Ping River, which borders it on its western side. Although little visited by Western tourists, it is nonetheless attractive to those with a keen interest in Thailand's ancient history. It is said to have been built over 700 years ago. Its historic park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is well worth a visit. The agglomeration includes the ancient walled city to the north, dating from the same period as Sukhothai, 70 km away, and the contemporary districts to the south.
