Population approx. 25,000. At the center of the Celje-Maribor-Ptuj trade triangle. The site was occupied in Roman times as Civitas Negotiana. In the 14th century, the city was equipped with ramparts and four towers. Turkish assaults took their toll on the town, which also suffered numerous fires. Most of the old buildings date from the construction of the Vienna-Trieste road. Slovenska Bistrica was German-speaking for a long time, until the mid-20th century, and is now the administrative center of this southeastern part of Pohorje. Its renovated castle, municipal museum, ancient Roman fort and several churches are well worth an extended stop.
