93 km south of Chachapoyas, Leymebamba or Leimebamba is a very quiet traditional village where an important discovery in the history of archaeology took place in 1997. More than 200 mummies were found at the Laguna de los Condores and are still being studied in the splendid museum dedicated to them, which was voluntarily established there to boost the local economy. You can visit the museum from Chachapoyas but it is still a 2 hour drive. The ideal is to stay in the museum or in one of the lodges below Kuélap, which are half way. From here we can also reach Cajamarca at 7 hours drive.
