This gold mine, in operation since 1993, is the second largest active gold mine in the world and the largest in South America! It is owned by Newmont Mining Corporacion. You can get an idea of the mine by visiting www.yanacocha.com, but the mine site is not accessible to the public. The social tensions it has caused are still not resolved to this day. One of the most famous detractors, Maxima Acuña, winner of the Goldman Prize, has stopped a new extraction project in Conga near the Laguna Azul where she owns the property. Yanaocha is one of the main resources of the region.
