Key Colony Beach is a quiet island in the Middle Keys whose population quadruples during the high season. It is mostly made up of vacation homes. Originally, it was a small island of 40 hectares named Shelter Key. It was artificially enlarged and equipped with canals in the early 1950s until it exceeded 150 hectares. A small dive 5 miles south of this Key will reserve you a big surprise: you will come face to face with an army ship, theUSS Thunderbolt. It is not there because of a damage but was voluntarily sunk in 1986 for the pleasure of divers.
