Arriving at Mile Marker 60, you are on the island that is the heart of the Keys. It was named after a construction worker on the Florida East Coast Railroad who exclaimed, "This is going to be a marathon! Marathon Key was deserted for a long time; this former fishing village and pirate haven had only 17 souls in 1926; it now has more than 8,000. Very committed to the protection of the fauna and flora, Marathon is known for hosting one of the few free beaches in the Keys: Sombrero Beach. Its location halfway between Key Largo and Key West makes it a prime stop on your visit to the Keys.
