Mile Marker 82.5 in the Upper Keys, an hour and a half drive from Miami. Islamorada, whose name means purple island, was discovered by the Spanish in 1513. It is actually an archipelago composed of several small islands. Today, it is known as the fishing capital of the world. It is indeed the main activity of its 6,800 inhabitants. Wherever you turn, you will see small or large boats, fishermen and fish (mainly swordfish, tuna and marlin). Islamorada is a small paradise with its restaurants and hotels on the water, very popular with Miami residents who escape there on weekends.
