Situated on the banks of the Grey River and the Tasman Sea, Greymouth is the urban center of the coast. Although Abel Tasman and Cook passed close by, the weather and the rugged coastline prevented them from landing. It was Thomas Brunner and Charles Heaphy who first visited in 1846. The town benefited from the gold boom that lasted until the early 1920s. Today, there are few attractions in the town center, but it remains a starting point for the famous TranzAlpine train line to Christchurch via Arthur's Pass.
