Westport is located on the Tasman Sea, on the banks of the Buller River. The town, which today has a population of 4,600, was established in 1860 when John Rochfort discovered coal and gold in the area, which contributed greatly to the development of the region. The center has preserved some of its 19th century architecture. Westport is the main port on the West Coast, but it is not as pleasant as its sisters Greymouth and Hokitika. However, some points of interest remain such as Buller Gorge at 20 km, the sea lion colony at Cape Foulwind at 10 km south, Denniston at 9 km north, or Punakaiki at 60 km south.
