Founded in 1866, this small town with a Wild West feel made a quick fortune in 1870 with the discovery of gold veins on its land. Its name comes from reef, meaning "vein of quartz and gold". In 1888, thanks to this new prosperity, it became the first town in the Southern Hemisphere to have public lighting. It lies on the edge of Victoria Forest Park, the country's largest forest park, where several trails are open to hikers.
