At the foot of the peninsula, Thames has a Far West feel and is the district's largest town. A strategic location for the Maoris and later the Europeans, it was named after Captain Cook, who sailed into the mouth of the Waihou River. In the early 1850s, gold deposits were discovered here, but prospecting met with opposition from the local Polynesian population. By 1870, however, no fewer than 20,000 people had flocked here. When the first mines were exhausted, there was a second rush in the 1880s, as new veins were exploited in the surrounding area. Today, tourism is its main attraction.
