Before Sant'Agata, a brief detour takes us to San Marco d'Alunzio, a small medieval town that is a commune of the Nebrodi Park. Its foundation dates back to the 4th century B.C. during the Greek colonization. It was conquered during the Punic wars by the Romans, then by the Byzantines, the Arabs and finally the Normans. At the entrance, on a rock, stands the temple of Hercules, from the Hellenic period, which, during the early Middle Ages, was transformed into the church of San Marco. Two other churches are also worth a visit, the one of the Badia Grande del Savaltore, founded in 1176 by Margherita, wife of Guglielmo II, and the one of San Teodoro, in Byzantine style, which can be recognized by its Greek cross plan. The town of San Marco d'Alunzio, although small, also has a Benedictine abbey dating from 1082. The churches of Sant'Agostino and San Giuseppe house the Museum of Byzantine and Norman Figurative Art and the Museum of Sacred Art, respectively
