It is one of the most beautiful towns in Sicily, and also one of the most unknown. At an altitude of 931 m, the proud and austere Enna, lost in the mists, dominates Sicily, enjoying an impressive panorama of the Dittaino valley and the interior of the island, reminiscent of Tuscany. Due to its elevated and well-defensible position, Enna has been an important strategic centre since ancient times. First Sicilian, then Greek, it became a real fortress in the Byzantine period and was hardly conquered by the Arabs in 859. From this date onwards, it experienced a particularly flourishing period which continued under Frederick II and Frederick III of Aragon. It is a little far from the traditional tourist circuits... but we will not complain about it. The city is divided in two: Enna Bassa and Enna Alta. It is in the latter that the historical sites and the main points of interest are located, along the Via Roma. There is no need to try to reach the upper town by car: it is better to park in front of the castle.Festivities. Among the annual events that take place in Enna, the Holy Week, inherited from the Spanish Inquisition, is particularly impressive, with religious orders parading around in white tunics and hoods. From April to October, a Formula 3 Grand Prix is held 9 km south of Enna on the Pergusa circuit. On July 2, for the Festa della Madonna, mastazzoli (apple cakes) are served in front of the fireworks.Tourist office (413 Via Roma; +39 0935 502 362; www.provincia.enna.it) open 9am-1pm and 3pm-5:30pm Monday to Friday, Saturday mornings only in summer. The office is efficient and well documented. Some staff members speak English
