On the road leading from Syracuse to Enna, we come across Vizzini, a charming little village, inhabited since the Bronze Age by all the civilizations that have succeeded one another on the island: Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Norman, etc. Vizzini is nestled in the Hyblean mountains. Mount Lauro with an altitude of about 986 meters overlooks Vizzini located on its foothills that alternate limestone hills and semi-desert plateaus. The overwhelming heat that reigns in summer, described by the writer Giovanni Verga (the Sicilian Zola) native of Vizzini, in his most famous work: Mastro don Gesualdo, of which here is an extract. "The bare cliffs seemed white-hot. There was no shade, no greenery, hills after hills, overlapping, bare, burnt, stony, dotted with rare and meager olive trees, dusty prickly pear trees. Walking through the village today, one discovers several churches or palazzi, including that of the Verga family, which is worthy of interest. The main church of the town, San Gregorio Magno, preserves some elements dating from before the earthquake, including a Gothic portal on the south side.
