The city is the descendant of the city of Leontinoi, famous since Homer located there the unfriendly giants, the Lestrigeons that Odysseus had to face during his Odyssey. Beyond the legend, the city, built in 729 B.C., has had a turbulent history with various earthquakes that eventually destroyed it. The archaeological site presents its Greek and Roman history on the hill of Metapiccola (prehistoric village). Today it is a citrus production centre. Note the 17th-century church of Sant'Alfio, with its three-storey façade and a silver statue of St Alfio, and the Scammacca Palace.
