With a little more than 140,000 inhabitants, Pinar, founded in 1774, has logically established itself as the capital of the province. Its wooden houses, its porticos with columns and its neoclassical architecture of the XIXth century give a certain charm, without however holding the visitor too much. And it is true that it is not a very interesting city to visit (except for the Teatro Milanes and the Francisco Donatien cigar factory), especially in comparison with neighboring cities such as Vinales, which are much prettier... You should consider this city as a base camp to visit the area and make excursions to the tobacco fields and their factory located in the surroundings. But, once again, we recommend Vinales as a base camp... But remember to book your accommodation beforehand if you go in high season because Vinales (30 km away) is really popular. Rum lovers, note also the existence of a typical speciality of the region, based on rum and guava: the famous and fearsome Guayabita del Pinar, produced since 1892! You can taste it at the Casa del Ron (Calle Maceo n° 151).
