María la Gorda is the tip of the western tip of Cuba. Sea (the long beach is sublime) and wild forest, perfectly preserved because of their isolation, will attract adventurers, lovers of calm and diving. In terms of infrastructure, it is difficult to be more minimalist. With only one hotel-restaurant, one diving center and a few houses, it is the anti-Varadero par excellence (no bank on the spot, plan to have enough cash). Historically, the corsairs of the Caribbean and other brothers of the coast, regularly used the bay of Corrientes to repatriate their booty and make a quiet stopover. The legend says that during one of them, they left María there, a prisoner kidnapped during the plundering of a coastal city in Venezuela. Out of spite and boredom, María kept eating and ended up literally huge, gorda in Spanish... Remember to take a repellent with you: mosquitoes are fierce!
