It was from Cojimar, a small port 10 km east of Havana, that Hemingway went fishing with Gregorio Fuentes, captain of the boat that directly inspired the writer for his novel The Old Man and the Sea. In the village, the small and rather austere monument pays homage to the most illustrious of its residents. Upon hearing of Hemingway's death, all the fishermen of Cojimar donated a bronze coin from their boat. Once melted, these pieces were used to sculpt the bust of the writer that has stood guard on the pier ever since. To eat, head to the Terrazza de Cojimar, where Hemingway used to eat
