15 km southeast of Varadero, Cárdenas will serve as a counterpoint to the neighboring tourist bubble. The most curious will go there to immerse themselves in the Cuban reality, far from the big hotel complexes. There are no major sites to report, but a rather nice atmosphere and some colonial houses with an undeniable cachet. With its perfectly orthogonal urban layout, the young Cárdenas (1828) is proud to be the first city to have raised the Cuban flag, in 1850. Don't miss the Parque Colon, surrounded by the Cathedral of the Inmacula Concepción (1846) and with a statue of Christopher Columbus from 1862.
