A World Heritage Site, the third city founded by Velázquez, in 1514, nestles between the advanced hills of the Sierra de l'Escambray and the Caribbean Sea. It celebrated its 500th anniversary in 2014 with great and beautiful ceremonies. On this occasion, the city got a facelift as many renovations took place to prepare it for the anniversary and new bars opened for the occasion. The people of Trinidad like to joke about this and say that the city will not move like this again until its next 500th anniversary!Located on the road that connects Sancti Spíritus to the active port of Cienfuegos, Trinidad remains the best preserved colonial city on the island. With 50,000 inhabitants, it has established itself as one of the major tourist sites of the country. It is therefore difficult to go to Cuba without visiting the place. A simple walk in the old paved historical center, articulated around the Plaza Mayor which aligns the superb colonial palaces, is enough to understand the craze aroused by Trinidad. Nothing to do with the hasty constructions of Varadero. Here, architecture has a meaning, and one seems to go back in time while strolling in the alleys, where the pastel tones of the colonial houses and their deliciously old-fashioned interiors are in perfect balance. The quiet nonchalance of the inhabitants and the proximity of the sea and the mountains do the rest. A certain number of artists will know how to render the poetry of the place. Some even speak of the school of Trinidad. Benito Ortíz, after having cut sugar cane during most of his life, will become one of the great naive painters of the country. Trinidad is a must-see destination and deserves, beyond a brief courtesy visit, a stay of several days. In addition to the city stricto sensu, you can explore the surrounding area. Between the Valley of the Ingenios, the Topes de Collantes Natural Park and the Ancon Peninsula, the region knows how to hold on to those who put their bags there.
