This large town of more than 19,300 inhabitants has many churches and convents that can be visited, starting from Plaza Vieja and passing through the Arch of La Rosa. The remains of the castle of La Mota and its walls built by the Almohads, the Gothic-Mudejar church of San Juan Bautista, the ducal palace of the Dukes of Arcos adjoining the church of Santa María de la Mota, and the works of the sculptor Lorenzo Coullaut Valera, which has a beautiful museum that will be opened in 2019, are all worth seeing. As the city is home to a number of artisan shops, this often overlooked destination is well worth a stop.
