From the mid-19th century to the 1960s, the island was home to thousands of granite quarry workers. Abandoned, the quarries were gradually reclaimed by vegetation. Today, Pulau Ubin has just a few hundred inhabitants and is one of Singapore's last undeveloped areas. For the locals, who call Pulau Ubin the "last kampung", or last village, the island has the feel of 1960s Singapore. It's hard to imagine. The change of scenery is guaranteed, and it's the ideal getaway for a day.
