With a population of 240,000, Taiping is Perak's second largest city. Although its tourist appeal is limited, there are a few British-era buildings as well as Hindu and Buddhist temples worth a visit. The city is also the wettest in the country, with over 4,000 mm of annual rainfall - twice the peninsula average! For a time, it was the state capital between 1876 and 1937, before giving way to Ipoh. Like many other cities in this part of the country, Taiping developed in the 19th century thanks to tin mining.
