Ipoh is a city of 850,000 inhabitants, famous for its monuments, old town and gastronomy. In the 19th century, it was nicknamed the City of Millionaires thanks to prosperous Chinese families working in the tin industry. Ipoh is divided into two zones by the River Kinta. The west is home to the superb railway station nicknamed the "Taj Mahal", the old town and Chinatown, where you can sample the famous Hokkien cuisine. Beyond lies the colonial quarter, with beautiful buildings such as the Royal Club Ipoh and the FMS Building. To the east, the New Town is less charming overall, but nonetheless boasts a number of architectural gems.
