9 km from Kuala Selangor lies the quiet village of Kuantan, site of one of the largest firefly colonies in the world. These kelip-kelip are the only ones in Asia to flash synchronously, a "technique" used to attract a potential partner. They congregate by the thousands, especially on the berembang, trees in the mangrove swamps of the Selangor River. They appear about an hour after sunset. Fireflies, which are found in abundance in estuaries, can be observed during night river cruises in the Firefly Park of Kampung Kuantan. An enchanting sight, especially on weekdays.
