With half a million inhabitants, the municipality of Melaka is one of the most dynamic in Malaysia. While industrial activities dominate the local economy, tourism plays a key role thanks to Melaka's inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. Its concentrated historic centre is full of traditional shophouses, Chinese temples and sumptuous Peranakan mansions. The old colonial buildings from the time of the Dutch and British have been turned into a museum, making Melaka an important museum centre. The Melaka River runs through the city and offers beautiful views and terraces to sit on. From the heights of the city, one observes with astonishment - and a touch of circumspection all the same - the land reclaimed from the sea for the extension of the modern city. Melaka is also a gastronomic capital where you can indulge in the famous nyonya cuisine. A night market held from Friday to Sunday attracts tourists from all over the country. They wander among the stands of the street vendors who sell anything and everything in a good-natured atmosphere.
