The protected area of Xe Pian (or Sepiang) covers 2,400 km². It can be reached by following Route 18. A Lao Loum community lives at the edge of the swamps, at the foot of Phou Asa (a rocky outcrop) from where one can see a vast panorama. The Khiat Ngong swamp, one of the largest and best preserved in the country. It is a privileged place for bird watching. One can also see there an endemic tree, the mak chong, particularly sought after by Chinese traders. The rice harvest takes place in October, and one can see real rural scenes. Local life is interesting for travelers who are not in a hurry.
