Today, Aguascalientes is the capital of a state distinguished by its agricultural production and livestock, and is one of the most prosperous commercial and manufacturing cities in the country. Perched at an altitude of 1,800 m, the city is home to some fine remains of colonial buildings constructed between the 16th and 19th centuries in baroque, neoclassical and eclectic styles. It is also the birthplace of José Guadalupe Posada (1852 - 1913), a Mexican engraver and illustrator who popularized the character of the Catrina, the long, elegantly dressed skeleton woman associated throughout the country with the Festival of the Dead.
