The main attraction of San Blas is of course its beaches and surrounding bays (former pirate refuges), much quieter than those of the Caribbean coast, but the port is also surrounded by a rich tropical ecosystem, where you can also take beautiful walks along estuaries and mangroves. The Cerro del Vigía, on the Isla del Rey, is considered a sacred place by the Huichol Indians. The main activity of the inhabitants is fishing; 3 fishermen from San Blas became national heroes after surviving on the high seas for 289 days. They had left San Blas on October 28, 2005 to fish, but the ocean currents dragged their boat out to sea, and they were picked up by a Taiwanese fishing boat 9 months later more than 8,000 km from home!
